Austin Books & Comics Haul - June 2016

Hellooo! I didn't want June to go by without at least a short post so sharing my latest geeky shopping haul.

Austin Books & Comics is our favorite comic book store in Austin. Mickey and I dropped by last week to pick up the latest issue of Descender, a comic series by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen (who painted our proposal photo). The storyline has been great so far. It's based in a universe where androids and humans are both trying to survive. Androids and humans are in a (thus far) quiet war with each other, but the story also focuses on the main character Tim-21 and how he might be the key to understanding the Harvesters, who nearly decimated the galaxy's population years ago. I did not do a very good job of summarizing the series, but hopefully I was somewhat convincing. We would highly recommend picking it up if you're into sci-fi. There are already 2 tradebacks out!

Descender Issue #12

I knew we were dropping by our favorite comic book store so I specifically said, "I hope I don't buy anything else at ABC."

So naturally I bought something else.

Check out the latest additions to the Batman collection.

I picked up this mug because it was glow-in-the-dark... that was the only reason. I've mentioned it before, but we don't have anymore room in our kitchen for any new cups, but... glow-in-the-dark. I didn't have a glow-in-the-dark mug yet, guys!

The glow-in-the-dark logo is on both sides of the black mug. It's a pretty normal-sized and normal-shaped mug compared to all the others I've purchased lately.

I also bought another Funko Pop. Are you surprised?

I've actually bought several new Funko Pops lately particularly because of the Suicide Squad release in connection with the upcoming movie. I plan to share the full Austin Funko Pop collection in its own post some time in the near-ish future so you'll be seeing those eventually! (You like how I said "eventually" and not "soon"? Hehehe)

Since I only collect Batman-related characters, I had my eyes on the (4) Joker and (4) Harley Quinn Suicide Squad Funko Pops. I still haven't collected all versions of the Suicide Squad Joker and Harley Quinn Funko Pops and I've slowly kind of given up since I don't want to dedicate so much of my time to finding all of them. Funko Pops are cute, but it really shouldn't be consuming my life. That's just silly.

After buying a few Jokers and Harley Quinns, it hit me that I should also add Suicide Squad Killer Croc to my Funko Pop collection too. He's most commonly a villain to Batman and I grew up with him in Batman: The Animated Series. With that reasoning, here he is.

I've heard about upcoming Funko Pop releases for Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and, specifically this year at San Diego Comic-Con, an underwater Suicide Squad Batman! I don't think I'll be sleeping overnight on cold cement to get a hold of the SDCC exclusive, but that doesn't really change the fact that it's super cute and it'd still be nice to have.

Good luck to everyone trying to hit up the Funko booth at SDCC this year! They've changed their system to a Sails Pavilion ticketing system this year, which I believe, for anyone who isn't familiar, means that exhibitors and friends with early access to the exhibit hall will not have an advantage over the rest of us anymore. Instead, if you get in line early enough (i.e. sleep on the concrete floor overnight), the odds of you nabbing a ticket and getting the Funko Pop you want are a lot higher. I believe the new system will reward people who actually commit to those lines. Let me know if anyone has a different understanding of the new system. Regardless, good luck to anyone planning to try this year!

Speaking of, SDCC is coming in less than a month! Super excited to share that experience with you guys. We're also planning to buy tickets for New York Comic Con for the first time! That happens in October. I'm excited to experience another comic convention and also excited to get back in New York for all the delicious foods.

Alright, my short blog has become long enough. Have a great rest of the week and an amazing and safe upcoming 4th of July weekend! YAY! LONG WEEKEND!
